Susan Zwerling

About Susan

I have a delightful job because I get to work with museums and peer reviewers all across the country who participate in the American Alliance of Museum’s (AAM) Museum Assessment Program (MAP). This flagship grant program is funded by IMLS and has served more than 5,000 museums. I also work with museums participating in the AAM Core Document Verification Program, and I currently serve on the National Law Enforcement Museum’s Advisory Committee.
I began my museum career at an Art and Science Museum as a tour guide, and realized I’d found my place in the world. Several positions later, I became the Director of the Education & Programs Department. I also have a background in healthcare, and staff training and development and I hold an M.A. in Museum Studies from John Hopkins University. I love traveling, food, fiber arts, and visiting museums everywhere!

My Connection with the NDSC

I authored the AAM toolkit: Managing Museum Volunteer Programs a few years ago and am about to begin work on the second edition. Of course, NDSC was one of the very valuable resources I included in the toolkit, and I mentioned NDSC in at least one of the 3 podcasts I did with the American Association for Museum Volunteers while discussing current trends. I later reached out through the NDSC Facebook group to deepen my knowledge about NDSC - Madelyn Mayberry and Sharon Bazarian responded, and a very supportive and fruitful connection has evolved!
