Having been a teacher, staff developer, administrator and New York State program director over my 41 year career, it was only natural that I sought volunteer work that involved learning and teaching. As a docent at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY I work with a wonderful group of inspiring adults. It has been everything I was looking for. Our group has a close relationship with the education department and the museum staff. Curators meet with us often to share information about the collection and exhibits which change regularly, keeping us on our toes. I get to learn about art and share my knowledge and the joys of the Everson with children as well as adults.
My Connection to the NDSC
The 2019 Symposium in Washington, DC was the first I attended. I was a new docent the last time the Symposium took place in 2017 and must have thought it wasn’t for me. I’m glad I didn’t let this one pass me by. I have always enjoyed quality conferences, both attending and helping to organize. This was no exception. I loved the opportunities to visit exemplary museums, attend informative breakout sessions, and meet docents from all over the United States and Canada. I’m thrilled to be a regional director and am already encouraging my docent group to plan on Kansas City 2021. I’m ready to spread the word in the mid-Atlantic.
