Barth Root, Docent, Library of Congress and Smithsonian American Art Museum

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world with more than 167 million items in the collection. Everyone is welcome to visit the Library’s Capitol Hill campus or its website (loc.gov).While the Library’s campus now includes three buildings, most visitors come to see the iconic Thomas Jefferson Building, finished in 1897.It was designed to be an ornate palace for books as well as a declarative statement that America had arrived on the international scene and was ready to match established European culture and intellect.
