Travel Tips

October is a wonderful time to visit Washington, DC. The weather should be in the 70’s during the day and the 50’s at night. For up-to-date information, check Yahoo weather -

If you are traveling to the NDS2019 from outside the United States, be sure your passport is valid for at least six (6) months from the date of your planned departure from the US. Canadian visitors do not need visas to travel to the US. If in doubt, consult the US Department of State website-

Washington is served by three airports. The closest (about 30 minutes by car) to downtown Washington and the Mayflower Hotel is Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA); Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Baltimore Washington International (BWI) are about one hour away from the hotel by car. All three airports are served by a variety of buses, shuttles and taxis; some have rail or Metro subway connections.

Those traveling by train will arrive at Washington’s Union Station, a convenient short trip via Metro’s Red Line to Farragut North Station, two blocks from the Mayflower Hotel. If you are traveling via Metro – either subway or bus – you will need to purchase a plastic SmartCard.  The basic card, obtainable from vending machines at all stations, costs $10, of which $2 is a non-refundable fee and $8 is the amount of cash loaded onto the card. For addition information (and maps) about public transportation in Washington, DC, consult the WMATA website -

Naturally, as the Nation’s Capital, Washington hosts its fair share of tourists. In general you will find people – Metro station managers, for example – helpful. Your only problem will be to decide how to fit all that you want to see and do into your schedule.

Enjoy your visit!  Why not add a few days to the beginning or end of NDS2019 and enjoy more of what the city has to offer?  While it is hard to enumerate all of Washington, DC’s cultural opportunities, the below websites are good places to start your search.
