From her childhood dream to become a docent, inspired by early visits to the Philadelphia Art Museum, through a career devoted to docent leadership, Gin has consistently promoted docent advancement.
She became a SLAM docent in 1988, and was first elected to the NDSC board in 2001. Since then, her leadership accomplishments have blossomed.
At SLAM, Gin’s been pivotal in the growth of special tours, notably the Wee Wednesday tours for toddlers, ABC school tours, and most recently, the Interfaith tours which were presented at the 2019 NDS in Washington, DC. She has served as SLAM Docent Chair and brought the NDS to St. Louis in 2011. This was a dream for Gin, bringing together her two favorite groups: NDSC and SLAM Docents!
With NDSC, Gin has served as Regional Director, Education Director and VP, President and past president. She continues to serve the NDSC as board advisor and to help docents and museums hosting NDSC’s Symposia.
Other leadership roles for Gin as president, past and present include: American Association of Museum Volunteers (AAMV), the Museum Docent Education Association (MDEA), and the Docent Council of Metropolitan Saint Louis. Her conference presentation credentials are also impressive.
For all she has done for the St. Louis community, Gin received a 2009 Women of Achievement Award. For all she has done for SLAM Docents and the NDSC, my friend, Gin Wachter, deserves this spotlight tribute.
