Neither Snow, Nor Rain . . . . (June 2019)

Madelyn Mayberry, Vice President of the National Docent Symposium Council; Docent, Des Moines Art Center and the Pappajohn Sculpture Park

Docents braved the storm to provide a promised outdoor sculpture tour.

Des Moines Docents

A recent touring experience in the extended rainy season of Iowa illustrated the dedication of docents to art experiences for children. Despite thunderstorms, the tour was confirmed by a cell phone call with the teacher en route.  The 3rd graders from Kuemper Catholic School had been riding a school bus for almost two hours from rural Carroll, Iowa to Des Moines for the tour. Docents grabbed all the umbrellas available and met the bus. The children toured around the park, while the docents shared stories of sculptures  by Keith Haring, Mark di Suvero, Jaume Plensa, Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama, Ai Wei Wei, Deborah Butterfield, Martin Puryear, Louise Bourgeois, Richard Serra, Olafur Eliason and others. The children were troupers despite the weather… as were the docents! It was a memorable and joyful experience for all!

Docents and guides will go to any lengths to share their dedication and passion for art with their community, schools and the public.
