Thomas Hart Benton: 20th Century Artist

Come learn about the first American artist to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine: Thomas Hart Benton.

The tour will begin at the Nelson-Atkins Museum which holds the largest public collection of his art. There in front of his paintings, Stephanie Fox Knappe, curator of American Art, will lead us in discovering Benton’s style, techniques and uniquely American subject matters.

Following, we will visit his home and studio which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was occupied by the Benton family for over 40 years. We will learn about Benton’s many interests and his daily routine that influenced his work. The stone house and detached studio/carriage house, located in the historic Roanoke neighborhood, is under the supervision of the Missouri Dept. of Natural Resources. Tours will be led by experienced site staff.
