The National Docent Symposium Council (NDSC), is the only national docent organization providing a platform for docents and guides for education and exchange of ideas since the first docent symposium in 1981, which has continued to the present. The NDSC website www.nationaldocents.org, the National Docents Forum Facebook group, and Regional Roundtable zoom conversations enable continuous collaboration. The 2017 revision of the Docent Handbook published by the NDSC is a respected education resource and reference for docents and guides at all types and sizes of cultural institutions. A 2022 publication, Tours for Children and Teens, builds on the principal of the Handbook and provides real-world examples and expert ideas and techniques.
The NDSC Council consists of docent/guide leadership from across the United States and Canada who work voluntarily toward the NDSC mission to promote continuous improvement in docent and guide practice.

The NDSC Education Grants are awarded to first time attendees of the National Docent Symposium to cover the registration fee. By awarding the grants, the Council promotes symposium attendance by docents/guides who might not otherwise be able to attend, and seeks to broaden and diversify the number of museums, galleries, and cultural institutions that will send docents/guides to future symposia.
